Like New Year's resolutions, but less specific,
more inclusive,
easier to have success with.
There is a movement in creative circles on the internet to choose
a guide for the year ahead.
In 2011 I chose the word complete. I was feeling annoyed with myself for beginning so many creative projects, but failing to see them through to the finish. I get excited by the idea of art to paint, a blanket to knit, a photo class to join, getting myself involved in so many projects that I lose focus and not much gets accomplished. My goal, my OLW, was to finish what I had started before beginning anything new. As the pages of the calendar turned though, the meaning of my word grew. It became more about learning to maintain balance and take care of the complete me...physically, emotionally, mentally. And while I got a lot accomplished on my projects list, I learned a huge lesson in the process. I began to let go of things that weren't "bringing me life" (a phrase my sister gifted me with that has had huge implications in all facets of my life). In order to take care of the complete me, I began to weigh each aspect of my life and honestly ask myself if the hobby/relationship/activity brought me joy, happiness, life. Was it something that was building me up, and if not, how could I change it? In some areas I made changes, like making running a weekly habit. In other areas I just had to let go, like choosing not to write at Joy Jottings anymore. Complete - that one little word - had a huge impact on my growth in 2011. It sounds simple, but those eight letters were profound.
Toward the end of the year my new word for 2012 began to make itself known. At first I thought it would be story because I was feeling so ready to share my story again, but that didn't end up sticking. Another word appeared. Truth has chosen me. More specifically...speaking the truth to myself. Discerning what it is I need in this moment, on this day, during this week. Taking the time to listen, to hear, and to act upon the truth being spoken inside of me. 2012 will be my journey toward truth. I am excited for the adventure.
