A Quote for the First Day

Happy 2013!

A clean slate, a fresh start, the beginning...

Making resolutions, setting goals, hoping, praying, dreaming, scheming, perhaps a little wishing...

Although I watched the movie many times as a kid, I'm reading The Neverending Story by Michael Ende for the first time. The first half of the book unfolded exactly how I remember the movie scenes. I've just passed the halfway point though, and this part of the story is all new to me. I'll watch the movie again when I'm done because it's quite possible that my memory is failing me. It tends to do that with books and movies.

Anyway, I happened to read the following quote on New Year's Eve. It seems to me to be the perfect bit of story to begin a new year.

Some days later they had another serious talk.
Bastian had shown the lion the inscription on the reverse side of the Gem. "What do you suppose it means?" he asked. 'DO WHAT YOU WISH.' That must mean I can do anything I feel like. Don't you think so?"
All at once Grograman's face looked alarmingly grave, and his eyes glowed.
"No," he said in his deep rumbling voice. "It means that you must do what you really and truly want. And nothing is more difficult."
"What I really and truly want? What do you mean by that?"
"It's your own deepest secret and you yourself don't know it."
"How can I find out?"
"By going the way of your wishes, from one to another, from first to last. It will take you to what you really and truly want."
