My Pretty Woman Moment

I bought a fancy dress today and high-heeled shoes. Neither of which were something I’d have dreamed of wearing, but they felt so right when I put them on. "It’s what we’re seeing on the runways and very Kate Middleton," she said. I thought I’d heard of her before – a princess perhaps? (I’ve since learned that Duchess is her proper title.) Nevermind. It was exciting.

I stepped into the store feeling very Julia, only less hooker and more ordinary mama instead. Circling the racks twice and even stopping in front of the counter, waiting while she finished typing her email. She never acknowledged me, and I almost walked out. Mentally stamping my foot, I began my third trip around the store and this time I chose a shirt. Not really what I came for, but a start toward the dressing room. Just then she was next to me and I sighed, ”Will you help me?”

There were two of them then, pulling dresses off racks, guessing sizes, talking colors and accessories. The one thing I can’t seem to get out of my head though is the dressing room. Instead of hooks it was one long pole – all those fancy dresses spanning the length of the wall, chosen just for me with my dinner-of-a-lifetime in mind.

What color? Send pictures! NOW! Allen shlepped me all over Pasadena the other day b/c I needed shoes for a wedding I'm in this weekend. He knows I'll just go buy the first thing, ugly or not, unless he's there. It was so fun to actually find shoes that make me feel lovely. Chalk one up for Allen, my personal shopper. And chalk one up for the same request I made to him..."Will you help me?"
