A Few of My Favorite Things: March's List

This photo app on my iPhone has been a favorite toy of mine for many months now. I've been quietly snapping shots and getting creative with its filters by myself until recently when my sister-in-law got an iPhone too. I shared my Instagram love with her, and she hasn't looked back. Now we've gotten more family on board, and suddenly there's a whole new way to share our lives with each other. I made the mosaic above using my leftover Instagram shots from March. It's so much fun having the power to turn any old picture into a work of art!

Our new favorite recipe...easy, delicious, and makes great leftovers! Over the last year I've started serving more meatless meals, and this one is now a regular in our rotation. My changes to the recipe are: I use a whole yellow onion, a whole can of organic black beans (rinsed & drained), skip the poblano pepper, and opt for the toaster oven method for roasting the sweet potato. Don't be afraid to be generous with the cumin and chili powder, and definitely don't forget to pass the lime wedges at the table. I serve it with all the suggested garnishes and a pot of brown rice. Yum!

Every five years or so, it happens...my favorite nonfiction author comes out with a new book. I've had March 20 marked on my calendar for months, and the first thing I did that morning was go straight to the bookstore to buy Anne's new book. It's a journal about her first year of being a grandmother, and I loved it. I've marked it up from cover to cover with underlinings and margin-scribblings, just like I've done with all her others. Looking for a book about the writing life? Read "Bird by Bird". It was the first book of hers I ever read. "Operating Instructions" should be required reading for all new moms. It was my constant companion in those lonely early days of mothering an infant. If you're looking for a story of authentic faith, try "Traveling Mercies" or "Grace, Eventually". She tells the truth about her relationship with God and was the first person to make me believe that my relationship with him could be based on love rather than fear.

I can't remember when or why I was first introduced to TED, but anytime I watch (or listen) to one of their videos, my well is filled and I'm inspired. If you're ever in need of a little lift, check out the TED site and find something that interests you. I promise you'll be better for it. (A little hint for you multi-tasking mamas out there...many of the videos can be listened to rather than watched. So go ahead and plug in. It'll make folding laundry or doing dishes much more exciting!) Here are a few of my favorites: Brene Brown on Vulnerability, Elizabeth Gilbert on Creativity, Susan Cain on Introverts, and Ken Robinson on Schools and Creativity.
