"I was learning the secrets of life: that you could become the woman you'd dared to dream of being, but to do so you were going to have to fall in love with your own crazy, ruined self."
~Anne Lamott, from "Feeling Full: How to Live a Life That Satisfies the Soul"
I love this quote. It's exactly what I'm doing here on my blog, learning to fall in love with myself. And not just with the parts that are easy to love, the ones I'm eager to share with others, but the ones that feel crazy or even a bit ruined at the end of the day. The last few days I have found myself feeling more at the ruined and crazy end of the spectrum. It's an exhausting place to be, but it's also the perfect time to refocus my lens...on myself. Mothering is raw, soul-searching work. I cannot begin to be her best mama without putting myself first, engaging in radical self-care. For me that means eating well, sleeping more, setting aside the to-do list (it'll all still be there tomorrow), writing, sitting in the sun, spending time on the yoga mat or in running shoes, curling up with a book (and some chocolate), and endeavoring to remain in the moment.
Join me. How are you radically caring for yourself today?

what a timely post for me. i was just having this conversation with someone yesterday--about how we take care of ourselves (or rather, DON'T take care of ourselves). good luck with your mission--I am going to try for a little more self-love myself...sometimes it's hard.
Wonderful post ~ so important that we love our self ~ and nurture and care for our self ~ then we can do so much better caring for others ~ Hard women ~ society still puts the burden on us for so much of life ~ wishing for you what you wish for yourself ~ thanks, namaste, ^_^ ~ linked w/52 Photos
I can't decide if going to yoga or NOT going to yoga is the better way of caring for myself. These are the annoying little decisions I get myself into.
love the portrait.
and the quote. i love anne lamott and that quote today was perfect for me, thanks for having it here.
all those things are fantastic caretakers, today i am caring for myself by visiting all these beautiful photos of real women.
I agree with you. In order to be there for your children you have to take care of yourself first.
great thought provoking post, and a beautiful image!
striking and beautiful
Oh, lady... do I ever hear you!! I'm going through something similar (learning to love me more in order to show up as my best self) and while the things I need to do seem easy, I still struggle.
A tight circle of girl friends that I can call to listen helps. 8 hrs. of sleep definitely helps.
You are beautiful. Wishing you a happy day. xo
