A Confession

In 7th grade I had an English teacher named Mrs. Keebler. She was one of those teachers who had such a reputation that by 4th grade my friends and I already feared her. An imposing woman who ruled from behind her podium, I wonder now if she dreamed of being a college professor instead of spending her days with pre-teens. Discipline was never an issue in her classroom and though my nerves were always a little frazzled around her, she taught me well. I'd even venture to say that my love of the English language began in her class. I harbor a secret affinity for diagramming sentences because of Mrs. Keebler.

Even though I've always loved to read and write, I began college without a clue as to what I wanted to study. By the time I needed to declare a major, I had decided on an English degree. Lots of reading. Lots and lots of writing.

Lee's the one doing all the scholarly reading and writing these days, and I've gotten a chance to play with my beloved grammar again while editing his papers. I circle and cross out, capitalize and consult the thesaurus, but still there's one place where I'm embarrassingly confused. Even after braving Mrs. Keebler's class and graduating with a BA in English, I still am unsure about when to use a semicolon.

I think it's an option rather than a rule; that might be why it's difficult. Yes?
