collection n. something collected; especially : an accumulation of objects gathered for study, comparison, exhibition or as a hobby.
a gathering. an assemblage.
I've been thinking about collections a lot lately. Why do so many of us have them? Is it an innate human need, or do we fall in love with others' collections and want to have one of our own? Is it the collection itself that brings us joy, or is it actually the joy of the hunt we're craving?
As a kid I had a sticker collection. I think that was probably a given for those of us growing up in the 80's. I also had a button collection big enough to fill a cigar box. I loved dipping my hands inside and letting those smooth buttons sift through my fingers. All those colors and shapes thrilled me. Both of those collections have since disappeared. I have no idea why or where, but I wish I still had them. The buttons in the picture above are just the extras cut from new clothes over the last ten years or so. Liza loves to uncork those bottles and dump them on my bedroom floor, sorting and picking out her favorites. In high school I went through a penguin collecting phase. I already wrote about my angels, and I have quite an extensive collection of Santas that my dad has given me.
It's fun to check out what other people have chosen to collect. Here's a whole year of collections documented in blog form (and more recently published as a book).
I can't stop thinking about this tiny forest I spotted on Flickr a few weeks ago. It has me itching to start a new collection.

I think it's because it means the hunt is never over and there's opportunity for more fun even when you've found what you're looking for.
